Data from the TMM (Trans Murder Monitoring) project

According to data from the TMM (Trans Murder Monitoring) project, in the period from October 2022 to September 2023, 320 transgender people were killed as a result of anti-trans violence.

🚺 94% of those killed were trans-women and trans-feminine persons. A percentage that reflects hate speech as well as anti-gender propaganda that is almost entirely directed at trans women.

✊🏿 80% of cases with data on race and ethnicity were racially discriminated against transgender people.

☂️ 48% of those killed were sex workers.

📢 45% of transgender persons whose migration history is known were migrants or refugees.

📍 28% were killed on the street, and 26% in the place where they were staying.

All these data indicate a worrying trend when it comes to the intersectionality of misogyny, racism, xenophobia and the high degree of hatred towards sex workers, as intertwined factors that feed transphobia and anti-trans violence.

According to TMM, from 2008 to September 2022, at least 4,689 transgender and non-binary people’s lives have been brutally taken.

These are not just numbers, these are real people – friends, relatives, partners, spouses, parents, children. Each of these 4689 people had rich and fulfilling lives. Lives that in no way deserved to be cut short.

Let us remember their names and keep their memories alive, mourn the dead and fight for the living.

May they rest in power!
