New Legal Definition of “Woman” in the UK: A Threat to Trans Rights

New Legal Definition of “Woman” in the UK: A Threat to Trans Rights

On April 16, 2025, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom issued a ruling that defines a woman exclusively as a person who is biologically female, according to the Equality Act of 2010.

This decision excludes transgender women — even those who hold a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) — from accessing spaces and services designated for women, such as hospital wards, prisons, and sports clubs.

This precedent has caused deep concern among the LGBTIQ+ community and human rights organizations, who warn of serious consequences for the rights and safety of transgender people. Although transgender individuals formally remain protected from discrimination based on gender reassignment, access to women’s spaces is now determined solely by biological sex.

Our Voice of Solidarity:

As an initiative led by trans people, we express our deep concern over this ruling, which directly undermines the legal and social recognition of trans women.

This decision not only denies the reality of our identities but also endangers our safety, freedom, and dignity.

We, as the trans community, will not back down from our fight for recognition, respect, and equality in all areas of life. We advocate for inclusive and just policies that ensure equal opportunities and protection for everyone—regardless of gender identity.

We recognize this ruling as only one of many challenges ahead. But we also know this: together, we can make a difference.
